Build Your Own Kayak: A Wooden Wonder for Adventure Seekers

Are you ready for a thrilling kayaking experience? Introducing the 24 Hour Kayak, a compact and versatile wooden kayak designed specifically for lakes and protected bays. With its stable flat bottom, this kayak is perfect for photographers, anglers, and even those paddlers who are a little nervous. Suitable for individuals weighing between 50 and 100 kg, this kayak combines simplicity with beauty, making it an ideal choice for novice builders. In just two weekends, you can have your very own masterpiece ready to hit the water.

Introduction

Originally conceived as a basic wooden boat for local co-ops in coastal towns of Cuba, the project took on a new life in late 2018. Thanks to an opportunity to teach a boat building course at OficinaLab, a reputable school for wood-workers in Sao Paulo, the 24 Hour Kayak has become a reality.

This unique kayak measures 4 meters in length and offers unparalleled initial stability. It competes effortlessly with other sit-on-top kayaks in terms of comfort, performance, and appearance. The best part? With proper planning, the entire boat can be assembled in just 24 hours. Hence the name!

Breaking Down the Building Process

Building the 24 Hour Kayak is a breeze, even for those without extensive woodworking experience. Unlike traditional boat building techniques, this kayak requires only four plywood panels that are screwed and glued to a frame of lateral “stations” and longitudinal “chine-logs”. Say goodbye to expensive fiberglass, complex joinery, and precise cuts.

Here’s a quick overview of the process:

  • The bottom chine-logs are attached to the bottom plywood panel and then trimmed to shape.
  • Stations and stems forms are securely glued and screwed onto the trimmed bottom panel.
  • Upper chine-logs are added to the stations, creating the sheer line and completing the basic frame.
  • Oversized side panels are affixed to the lower and upper chine-logs and then trimmed.
  • A rough-cut deck panel is glued and screwed to the upper chine-logs, followed by trimming to the desired shape.
  • Finally, coaming risers and rim are laminated to the deck panel, and the cockpit opening is neatly trimmed.

Gone are the days of cutting precise shapes before attaching the plywood panels! With this innovative construction method, shaping the panels comes after attaching them to the frame. This ensures fair lines and guarantees an accurate final shape. Although you’ll need to accurately cut five station panels and two stem panels (templates are provided), this approach is forgiving and beginner-friendly. Ashes Still Water Boats believes that anyone can build this incredible kayak, and we couldn’t agree more.
