Canoeing Western Queensland Guidebook |
Information is sought to assist in the compiling of a free online Guidebook for canoeing on Western Queensland waterways, in the same format as the Guidebook to South East Queensland and Northern NSW waterways. The origin of information for a waterway will be acknowledged in the Guidebook, as will the origin of each photograph submitted. As with the SE Qld and Northern NSW Guidebook, a CD version may be available, for purchase. By submitting information or photographs the contributors agree to that limited commercial use of the material, or must state otherwise in their waterways information submission. Some sections will attract multiple responses. I will list each area as completed as it happens, but updates and a good photograph can always be added. |
Information required: The river, creek or dam should be open to public access. How far is it to the nearest town? What are the road directions, with distance for each leg? Are the roads named? Is the road black soil or other? The road condition is to be noted, eg. sealed or not, dry weather only access, 4wd access, how far is it from the road end to the water (carry distance) What is the launch site like? Is there a steep muddy bank, or is the launch from clean sand or grass? How big is the water body? Is it permanent or seasonal? If the water body is big enough, is there a separate launch and take out point, and if so how far away is the exit point? Day paddle trips are reckoned at about 12 kilometres. That makes for a six kilometre paddle out and back to the same launch point. Is there is the possibility of an overnight camp at a more distant site? Is there the possibility of a multi day trip, (on a river for example), if so how far is it between the launch and take out points on the river, and how far is it for the road car shuttle trip?. Is camping permitted, at the launch point, nearby, and at locations the canoeist can paddle to? Are there sections with wire fences across the water? Hazards, weirs, (possible portage trails around ) dams (are there access hours?) Other comments Photographs should include Road turnoffs from major roads, other roads junctions if road is not signposted Launch point and car parking area Camping site (if permitted) Photographs of the river, creek or dam, weirs,. Nearby towns Waterfalls Scenic photos of nearby towns, mountain ranges, camp shots, rain, floods, low water, bogged vehicles |
